Description

Yangmei - Red Bayberry

In Taiyuan city there's a place called Yangmei District at the junction with Hsinchu County.

Yangmei district was originally established as Yangmeili due to its pit valley geography and the wild-grown red bayberry trees all over the place.

Through two Hakka idioms we can learn about this fruit.

"April 8, Yangmei drops" - Fruits ripen around April and May (Chinese calendar). The reddening and dropping of the fruits mark the time in a year.

"Full by eating peach; Good apetite by eating plum; Standing below a tree after eating Yangmei" - The very sour taste of Yangmei makes people want to hide under a tree.

The original Yangmei was small and sour but through years the fruits have got enhanced with bigger in size and sweeter in taste.

The Taiwan Fruits Series

The blanket can be multi-functional while life can be filled with more Taiwanese elements.

Taiwan has been well known as the "Kingdom of Fruits".

The fruits that Taiwanese are familiar with, however, are not necessarily originated from Taiwan.

Taiwan's Fruit History is actually a collection of her colonial past.

The Taiwan Fruits Series designs are inspired by the cross-sections and shapes of the four Taiwan originated fruits.

Red Bayberry, Aiyu, Persimmon and Gac Fruit.
